Sam Burns broke his driver in disgust after hitting a snap hook on the par-4 9th hole during the third round of the FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.
Burns, 28, was left without a driver for the remainder of the third lap due to his outburst.
The American played in the last group with tournament leader Hideki Matsuyama.
Burns was just two strokes off the lead when he reached the 9th tee hole.
But his drive went wide left with a snap hook, resulting in a costly double bogey six.

To Burns’ credit, he came back with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole.
But then he landed with his 3 wood in the water on hole 12.
As things stand, Matsuyama is comfortably in the lead.
Matsuyama and members of his team were shockingly robbed in London last week.
Only Matsuyama’s wallet was stolen.
However, his caddy and his coach had their passports confiscated.
Matsuyama’s caddy and coach had to fly back to Japan to sort out their passports and visas.
The 2021 Masters champion is looking for his second title of the season and the tenth of his PGA Tour career.
Nick Dunlap is also in the running for the FedEx St Jude Championship, as are world number one Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele.

Burns’ last win was at the 2023 WGC Match Play, which is no longer on the PGA Tour schedule.
Although Burns has not won a singles tournament this season, he has six top-10 finishes in 2024, including one at the US Open (T9).
Burns is ranked 33rd in the world, but is currently predicted to be a safe bet at the Tour Championship later this month.
