Powerful Glory makes impressive debut in Pontefract maiden race for Richard Fahey

Powerful Glory made an impressive debut in the newcomers’ first race on the final leg of the Sky Bet Sunday Series at Pontefract.

Starting as the clear favourite for the Cure Leukaemia EBF ‘Newcomers’ Maiden Stakes at 10/11, the Cotai Glory colt has done well under stable jockey Oisin Orr and we have been following his progress since he was first spotted at the Goffs Breeze-Up Sale in the spring.

Powerful Glory got off to a relatively slow start in the six-furlong race, pausing briefly as the stalls opened, but Orr soon had him in a commanding position on the outside of his main rival Dash Dizzy and once he had a few furlongs to go the outcome was never in doubt.

Charlie Johnston’s Dash Dizzy held on until he faltered just before the finish, but Powerful Glory, contesting the Mill Reef Stakes, was far too good to win by five and a half lengths from Sands Of Indi (8/1), who took second place just before the finish line to Dash Dizzy, who eventually finished third.

Fahey said: “We are absolutely delighted, he has a great mind and a great temperament.

“The plan was to train him today but Oisin said they weren’t very fast and with the better horses you find they struggle to go slow and they just couldn’t guide him.

“He set the pace and didn’t have a tough race. I don’t know who he beat, but he beat them well and you can only beat what’s in front of you.”

“After a fantastic start, things are continuing to improve and we are delighted with him.

“We’ve got some good entries, he’s in the Newbury race (Mill Reef) at the end of next month, there’s a Listed race at Ayr and lots of other races but we’ll see how he is and work from there.”
