Fallen Angel on course for Head Nurse’s return to Leopardstown

Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Fallen Angel is on track to return to action in the Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes next month.

The daughter of Karl Burke’s horse Too Darn Hot has finished outside the top two only once in her six-start career, when she was the losing favourite in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, which she ran again this season.

She won the Classic title at the Curragh but missed the showdown with the best of her generation in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot after suffering a setback that put her out of action in mid-summer.

However, Burke confirmed that the team like her at their North Yorkshire base and hopes to have her back in the Group One feature race at Leopardstown during the Irish Champions Weekend, before potentially running her for a longer distance at the Arc meeting in Paris.

“Fallen Angel is in great shape and – touch wood – she seems to have overcome all her little problems,” said Spigot Lodge’s trainer.

“She’s moving really well and is on course for the Matron. That will be her next start and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her move up to 10 furlongs after that, possibly in the Prix de l’Opera on the Arc weekend.

“She was very good in the Irish Guineas and I don’t think she’ll take a bit of juice (in the ground) – I don’t think we’ll run her on very fast ground again. Maybe Ascot wouldn’t have been her thing this year and sometimes these things happen for a reason.

“Hopefully she stays in training next year.”
