Women’s Scottish Open: Lauren Coughlin secures victory by four strokes

Lauren Coughlin secured her second LGPA Tour title in three weeks by defending the overnight lead and winning the Women’s Scottish Open in comfort.

The world number 26 led fellow American Megan Khang by a single stroke on the final day at the Dundonald Links, shooting 69 (three under par) to move four strokes ahead.

Despite bogeys on the second and fourth holes, Coughlin recovered well, making five birdies – including three on the final five holes – to finish at 15 under par.

German Esther Henseleit, silver medalist at the recent Olympic Games in Paris, had to settle for second place again. Khang was two strokes behind along with Japanese Ayaka Furue.

Englishman Charley Hull, who started the last round three strokes behind, finished fifth with eight under par.

After winning her first LPGA Tour title last month at the CPKC Women’s Open in Alberta, Canada, the 31-year-old Coughlin has now added her second title in quick succession.

The American also secured her place on Team USA at the Solheim Cup next month in Gainesville, Virginia.

“I think if you had told me [I would win two titles] – let alone earlier this year, but probably earlier last year – I probably wouldn’t believe you at all,” she said.

“But it’s incredible and shows how hard I’ve worked to get here. It’s fantastic.”

Commenting on her poor start to the final round, Coughlin said: “I knew the game was super difficult and that bogeys were inevitable. In the previous two rounds, I had done a pretty good job of not making any.”

“I knew it would be OK to make a few, but I could still make a few birdies.”
