Cincinnati Open: GB’s Jack Draper beaten by Holger Rune in the quarterfinals

Jack Draper’s run at the Cincinnati Open ended in the quarterfinals when he was beaten in straight sets by Denmark’s Holger Rune.

The British number one had won his two previous matches after trailing by a set, but the 22-year-old was unable to repeat this feat against the 15th-seeded player.

Rune won 6-4, 6-2 after converting the only break point of the first set to give him a 3-2 lead.

The Dane broke again early in the second set and fended off three break points, taking his only other chance on Draper’s serve in the 11th game before serving out for the win.

Rune, 21, will play Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals after Hubert Hurkacz was eliminated from the quarterfinals due to a calf injury after losing the first set.

Top seeds Jannick Sinner Italy avenged last week’s defeat in Montreal against Andrey Rublev and won 4-6 7-5 6-4 to reach the semifinals against Alexander Zverevwho defeated Ben Shelton 3:6, 7:6, 7:5.

The number one in the women’s world Iga Swiatek from Poland defeated Mirra Andreeva 4:6, 6:3, 7:5 and will next face number three Aryna Sabalenkawho defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6:3, 6:3.

Home hope Jessica Pegula defeated Leylah Fernandez 7-5 6-7 7-6 and now faces Paula Badosawho won 6:3, 6:2 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
